The New York Times is retiring its standalone Audio app this October, folding its curated podcasts and narration services into the main News app—a shift reflecting the publisher’s evolving content strategy. Sam Dolnick, Deputy Managing Editor, frames the move as audio graduating “from Off-Broadway to Broadway,” signaling its growing prominence within the flagship app’s ecosystem.

Launched in May 2023, the Audio app offered a dedicated environment for spoken journalism—curated playlists, third-party content, and narrated articles. But as audiences shifted toward a seamless mix of text, audio, and video, it became clear the feature belonged in the integrated space, not a siloed app. The August rollout of the “Listen” tab in the News app—alongside “Home,” “Play,” and “You”—underscores that transition.

Going forward, users will find The Times’ full podcast archive—plus accompanying video versions of shows like The Ezra Klein Show and Hard Fork—within the News app. Personalization enhancements are also in development: audio episode suggestions, on-the-go article-to-audio transitions, and individualized listening experiences tailored by usage behavior.

Third-party publishers featured in the Audio app—such as The New Yorker—will not join the integrated platform. However, the consolidation underscores The Times’ bold product clarity: as the broader app redesign reveals, the News app is positioning itself as a unified entrance to all Times offerings.

This strategic move reflects a media brand that’s unsentimental in refining its product portfolio—letting legacy companion apps fade when they no longer serve the evolving user journey.
