74 TL;DR: Half of U.S. respondents in Reddit’s 2026 shopping study said they verify AI product recommendations on Reddit before buying. The marketing implication is less about another ad channel and more about community credibility becoming a checkpoint in AI-assisted purchase decisions. Article: Reddit is becoming a verification layer in AI-assisted shopping. In its Path to Purchase 2026 study, half of U.S. respondents and more than one in three in the U.K. said they check AI-generated product recommendations on Reddit before buying. The finding matters because AI speeds discovery, but shoppers still seek human experience before spending. The research covered 13,956 U.S. respondents and 6,485 U.K. respondents aged 18–65, all monthly users of social media, large language models and e-commerce. Reddit said 60% of U.S. respondents trusted the platform to verify AI recommendations versus 53% who trusted family or friends; the U.K. figures were 49% and 44%. More than one in five shoppers also said they add “Reddit” to search queries to find a human perspective. Reddit described the behaviour as seeking “community-vetted perspective, real experience, and a sense of whether a recommendation holds up.” The study also found that one in four surveyed shoppers said they bought immediately after seeing a decision validated on the platform. For marketers, the signal is important but not independent. The research was published by Reddit and sampled people who use social media, LLMs and e-commerce monthly, so the findings should not be generalised to all shoppers or to India without local evidence. A 2025 Reddit study reported that 42% of internet users considered a Reddit recommendation the most influential source in a purchase decision, ahead of expert reviews, influencers and star ratings. The practical shift is from optimizing for search visibility to building community credibility that shoppers, search engines and AI systems may surface later. Brands that answer questions transparently, correct misinformation and earn discussion can influence consideration without treating communities as another ad slot. As AI-assisted commerce grows, brand claims will need to survive both machine summaries and human scrutiny.
