TL;DR:

United Breweries is doubling down on premium beer, stronger brands and wider distribution in smaller Indian cities. Premium volumes rose 17% in Q1 FY27, with Heineken Silver and Kingfisher Ultra leading growth as UBL looks beyond metros for its next expansion phase.

Article:

United Breweries Limited (UBL) is sharpening its premiumisation strategy, strengthening flagship brands such as Kingfisher and Heineken while improving availability across India, including smaller cities. The push comes as premium beer continues to outpace the broader portfolio and consumers increasingly trade up to higher-priced offerings.

The Heineken-owned brewer reported a 13% increase in sell-out volumes in Q1 FY27, while net sales grew 7%. Premium volumes rose 17% excluding two states affected by company measures to mitigate Middle East-related disruptions. Heineken Silver grew 28% and Kingfisher Ultra 11%.

UBL said continued investment behind Kingfisher, Kingfisher Ultra and Heineken pushed its brand power to the highest level in 24 months. The company has also spent the past two years localising production and improving execution, helping premium margins turn accretive for the first time.

Distribution remains central to that strategy. Beer depends heavily on chilled availability, making refrigeration and retail infrastructure particularly important outside major metros. UBL has previously identified higher spending on refrigerators, especially in smaller cities, as a key investment priority.

“This has been a historic quarter for the industry as the beer revolution has started in India,” UBL Managing Director and CEO Vivek Gupta said, pointing to policy reforms and category growth across several states.

The growth opportunity remains substantial. India consumes roughly two litres of beer per capita annually, far below mature markets, while rising incomes, favourable demographics and premiumisation continue to support long-term category expansion.

For UBL, the next phase is increasingly about converting strong brand equity into premium sales through wider availability, local production and deeper retail execution beyond India’s biggest cities.
