TL;DR

AI tools such as ChatGPT, Google Gemini, AI Overviews, and others are increasingly citing Grokipedia — an AI-generated encyclopedia by Elon Musk’s xAI — as a source for factual answers. While Grokipedia’s overall footprint remains small compared to Wikipedia, its rapid rise in citations has sparked concern among researchers about accuracy, editorial oversight, and the risk of reinforcing misinformation when AI systems cite other AI-generated knowledge. Experts warn that Grokipedia’s lack of transparent human review and origin in automated generation could fuel biased or unreliable outputs.

AI-generated content and knowledge systems are reshaping how online information is surfaced and consumed. The latest trend — major generative AI platforms citing Grokipedia, an AI-generated encyclopedia built by Elon Musk’s xAI — has intensified scrutiny over how artificial intelligence sources and verifies factual material.

Launched in late October 2025 as an alternative to crowdsourced encyclopedias, Grokipedia is still far smaller than Wikipedia in total citations. Yet data from analytics firms shows the site appearing increasingly in responses from prominent AI assistants. In a dataset of over 13.6 million prompts, Grokipedia was cited more than 263,000 times in ChatGPT answers, spanning tens of thousands of unique entries. By contrast, English-language Wikipedia was referenced roughly 2.9 million times in the same sample — underscoring both the gap and Grokipedia’s unusually rapid adoption for a nascent knowledge platform.

Across platforms, the reliance on Grokipedia varies: ChatGPT tends to elevate it more prominently, placing it among primary sources in some responses, while Google’s AI Overviews generally list it as a supplemental reference alongside other sources. AI systems reportedly cite Grokipedia most frequently for niche or obscure factual questions, such as definitions and specific data points, rather than major world events.

Despite its growing use, Grokipedia has been criticized for lacking the transparent editorial processes and human oversight that undergird traditional reference works. Many of its early articles were adapted from Wikipedia or generated by xAI’s Grok chatbot, with researchers flagging instances of misleading content, ideological bias, and potential factual inaccuracies. Because Grokipedia is itself AI-generated, experts warn of a potential feedback loop in which AI models cite other AI-produced text — compounding errors rather than correcting them.

Industry figures argue that while AI citation of diverse sources can broaden perspective, the reliability and provenance of those sources matter significantly when answers are presented as authoritative. Without robust editorial controls or transparent sourcing, the risk of spreading misinformation — particularly on sensitive or contested topics — remains a central concern.

OpenAI has stated that ChatGPT draws from a broad range of publicly available references and applies safety filters to reduce risk, and that citations allow users to independently assess source reliability. Other companies, including Google and xAI, have not provided extensive public comment on Grokipedia’s rising citation presence.
