283 OpenAI has launched ChatGPT Ads in the UK, Mexico, Brazil, Japan and South Korea, widening its advertising business beyond earlier markets and giving brands access to users while they research, compare products and make decisions inside the chatbot. The expansion went live on 11 August, after OpenAI first announced plans for the five markets in May. Ads are limited to eligible users on ChatGPT’s Free and Go plans. Paid Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise tiers remain ad-free. OpenAI says advertisements are displayed separately from AI-generated answers and do not influence ChatGPT’s responses. The rollout matters because ChatGPT is moving from an experimental advertising environment towards a potentially significant new performance-marketing channel. OpenAI said in July that its models had surpassed one billion active users, giving the company a global audience at a scale few digital platforms have reached. The company has framed advertising partly as a way to subsidise broader access. “Ads support our commitment to making AI accessible to everyone by helping us keep ChatGPT available at free and affordable price points,” OpenAI said when outlining its advertising strategy. For marketers, the attraction is intent. Unlike conventional feeds, ChatGPT conversations can capture users when they are actively evaluating options or seeking recommendations. OpenAI describes its advertising proposition as reaching people as they “explore options, compare choices, and make decisions.” That opportunity comes with a trust test. OpenAI says conversations remain private from advertisers and user data is not sold to them. As the company expands advertising into more countries, maintaining that separation between commercial placements and AI answers will be central to whether users accept ads inside conversational AI.
