106 India’s gaming sector is no longer just a domestic success story — it’s a global contender, says Aditya Swamy, Director of Play Partnerships, Google Play. Speaking at an industry forum, Swamy highlighted that Indian studios and developers are now creating games that compete on quality, storytelling, and monetisation with global titles. “The ambition of Indian gaming has evolved. It’s no longer about scale alone — it’s about building experiences that can travel,” said Swamy. He noted that Indian developers are now targeting international markets while also shaping game genres and design frameworks inspired by regional culture and storytelling. Swamy credited this progress to affordable smartphones, improved monetisation models, and global publishing partnerships that have allowed Indian developers to scale faster than ever before. Google Play, he added, continues to invest in developer mentorship programmes, funding, and market insights to help studios expand internationally. With India now ranking among the top five gaming markets in the world, Swamy believes the next phase of growth will depend on intellectual property creation, cross-platform innovation, and AI-assisted game development. Industry experts agree that India’s gaming economy — projected to surpass $7.5 billion by 2028 — has moved from being a consumption market to a creative export hub, attracting global studios and investors alike.
