166 Hyundai Motor India reported domestic sales of 54,396 units in August 2026, up 23.6% year on year and its highest-ever figure for any August. Total sales, including exports, rose 8.8% to 65,796 units, making India the clear engine of the month’s growth. The number matters because it lands just before the festive season, when automakers typically build dealer inventory and demand. Yet the year-on-year headline needs context: August domestic volume was only 0.3% above July’s 54,210 units, so Hyundai largely sustained an already elevated run rate rather than accelerating sharply. Industry data also suggests Hyundai’s surge was part of a broader market upswing. Passenger-vehicle wholesale dispatches were estimated at 448,319 units in August, up 36% year on year, helped by new launches, discounts, easier financing and a favourable base ahead of festive buying. “Our August domestic sales of 54,396 units, the highest-ever figure for any August month, reflect the popularity of Hyundai’s versatile product portfolio,” said Tarun Garg, Hyundai Motor India’s managing director and chief executive. Domestic sales for April-August FY2027 were up 12.6% year on year. The weak spot is exports. Hyundai shipped 11,400 units in August, down about 31% from 16,500 a year earlier, with the company citing logistical constraints linked to the conflict in West Asia. That left domestic demand doing most of the work behind overall growth. The wider market deserves similar caution. Reuters reported that August 2026 comparisons benefited from a weak August 2025 base, when buyers delayed purchases ahead of expected tax changes. SIAM’s Rajesh Menon had already described the industry as entering the festive season with “expectations of strong consumer sentiment.” For Hyundai, the next test is durability: holding domestic volumes through the festive period while exports recover. A record August is useful; sustained share and margin performance will matter more.
