Google DeepMind’s Pushmeet Kohli says AI’s most transformative potential lies in democratising science, not just replacing work.

He emphasised AI’s role in solving complex, real-world scientific problems, including protein folding, quantum physics, and climate modelling.

At the recently held India Dialogue 2024 in New Delhi, Pushmeet Kohli, VP of Research at Google DeepMind, spotlighted a bold vision for artificial intelligence: its potential to democratise science and accelerate discovery across disciplines.

He said, and we quote, “The biggest promise of AI is not just replacing human tasks but enabling new ways of doing science.”

Kohli explained that while the common narrative around AI often focuses on automation and job displacement, its true power may lie in unlocking access to scientific tools and problem-solving at scale. “We believe that the biggest promise of AI is not just replacing human tasks but enabling new ways of doing science,” he said.

He cited examples from DeepMind’s own work — like AlphaFold, the breakthrough AI system that solved the long-standing problem of protein structure prediction. He also pointed to emerging efforts in quantum chemistry, material science, and climate modelling where AI can dramatically reduce the time and complexity required for breakthroughs.

Kohli added that AI can serve as a “reasoning engine” that augments human intellect rather than replaces it. “AI should work alongside scientists to propose hypotheses, run simulations, and interpret data faster than was previously possible,” he said.

The bigger goal, he noted, is to make these capabilities available to researchers and institutions everywhere—not just in elite labs. Democratising scientific access could mean faster innovation in low-resource settings, especially in healthcare, environment, and education.

Kohli’s remarks reframed AI as a global equaliser in research capacity and scientific equity, not just a disruptive force in business and labour.
