167 India has unveiled its first hydrogen-powered train, equipped with a 1200-horsepower engine, making it one of the most powerful hydrogen trains globally. This places India alongside countries like Germany, France, Sweden, and China in hydrogen rail innovation. The train is expected to begin operating on the Jind–Sonipat section by late 2025. Following successful trials at Chennai’s Integral Coach Factory, a preview video shared by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on X spotlighted India’s growing commitment to sustainable mobility. The train is designed to reach speeds up to 110 km/h, with a large passenger capacity of 2,638. This development signals a strategic move in India’s green transport strategy. It aligns with national sustainability goals and modernizes railway operations using zero-emission technology. Hydrogen train infrastructure also opens doors for hydrogen ecosystem development, including fuel-cell technology and storage solutions. According to rail insiders, this 1200 HP unit exceeds the capability of hydrogen trains in Germany and China, positioning India at the forefront of performance in clean-rail propulsion. India’s entry into hydrogen-powered rail marks a pivotal step in sustainable transit. As infrastructure and operational ecosystems evolve, hydrogen trains could transform clean mobility—especially in less‑electrified or heritage routes—and elevate India’s export and technological leadership.
