TL;DR:

Google’s ad business accelerated in Q2 2026, with Search up 17 percent and YouTube ads up 13 percent, showing that AI is reinforcing Alphabet’s core revenue engine rather than replacing it.

Article:

Google’s advertising engine gained speed in the June quarter, as Alphabet reported 17 percent growth in Google Search and other revenue and a 13 percent rise in YouTube ads, powered by stronger AI-led engagement and sustained marketer demand.

The numbers matter because they challenge the clean but premature theory that generative AI will quickly weaken search advertising. For now, AI appears to be making Google’s core products stickier, while giving advertisers more inventory, targeting signals and performance formats to buy.

Alphabet said total revenue rose 24 percent year-on-year to $119.8 billion in Q2 2026. Google advertising revenue reached $81.6 billion, with Search and other revenue at $63.3 billion and YouTube ads at $11.1 billion, according to the company’s SEC filing.

Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google and Alphabet, said: “Our AI investments are redefining what’s possible across every part of our business.” He added that AI features were “driving Search query growth,” while Gemini reached 950 million monthly active users.

The signal for brands is straightforward: paid search is not fading, but the rules of visibility are changing. Marketers will need to optimize for AI-shaped discovery, not just keyword auctions and legacy SEO. YouTube’s growth also shows that video remains a critical performance and reach channel, particularly around large cultural moments.

The pressure point is cost. Alphabet’s capital expenditure rose sharply as it scaled AI infrastructure, and free cash flow turned negative for the quarter. The ad business is funding the AI buildout, but investors and advertisers will now watch whether AI can keep expanding revenue faster than infrastructure costs climb.
