TL;DR:

OpenAI has launched GPT-Live for ChatGPT Voice, enabling real-time listening and speaking. The upgrade matters because voice AI is moving from scripted replies to live, task-ready interaction.

Article:

OpenAI has launched GPT-Live, a new family of voice models for ChatGPT that can listen and speak at the same time, marking a significant shift from turn-based voice assistants to real-time AI conversation. The rollout matters because voice is becoming a serious interface for search, translation, customer support and everyday AI tasks, not just a novelty layer on chatbots.

The company is rolling out GPT-Live-1 for paid ChatGPT users and GPT-Live-1 mini for free users across consumer plans on web, iOS and Android. OpenAI says the models use a full-duplex architecture, allowing ChatGPT to process speech while generating audio instead of waiting for a clean pause before responding.

In practical terms, GPT-Live can acknowledge a user mid-conversation, pause when someone is thinking, handle interruptions and delegate harder work such as web search or reasoning to GPT-5.5 in the background. OpenAI said, “GPT‑Live is built on a full-duplex architecture,” adding that it can “listen and speak at the same time.”

The scale is already meaningful. OpenAI says more than 150 million people use ChatGPT Voice and Dictation each week, a data point that explains why smoother voice interaction is strategically important.

The limits are equally important. GPT-Live does not support video or screen sharing at launch, and it is not initially available for ChatGPT Business, Enterprise or Edu workspaces. OpenAI’s system card also flags voice-specific safeguards, including real-time checks, safety interruptions and protections around self-harm, emotional reliance and impersonation risk.

The takeaway: GPT-Live is less about making ChatGPT sound human and more about making voice useful under pressure.
