TL;DR:

AI search is growing fast, but organic search still drives more Shopify traffic. The strategic shift is not replacing SEO; it is making product data and product pages structured enough to perform across both organic and AI-driven ecommerce discovery.

Article:

AI search is becoming a meaningful ecommerce acquisition channel, but it has not displaced organic search. Shopify says AI-referred sessions to merchant storefronts rose 197% year on year in Q2 2026, while organic-search sessions grew 12% from a much larger base and still delivered more visits than all tracked AI platforms combined. For retailers, the immediate question is not SEO versus AI search; it is whether product data can serve both.

The quality gap is more interesting than the traffic gap. Among shoppers who reached a product detail page, AI-referred visitors converted about 80% better than organic-search visitors overall, and roughly twice as well in specification-heavy categories. Half of AI-referred sessions landed directly on a product page, turning the PDP into the first brand touchpoint for many high-intent shoppers.

That makes structured product data a commercial issue, not an AI vanity project. Shopify says sessions in which AI used structured Shopify Catalog data converted at twice the rate of AI sessions relying on scraped or third-party feeds. Its published post does not disclose a full methodology, so the numbers are best read as platform-specific signals rather than universal ecommerce benchmarks.

Broader evidence points in the same direction. Adobe Digital Insights reported AI-driven retail traffic up 62% year on year in July 2026, while 42% of surveyed U.S. consumers said they had used AI assistants for online shopping.

Shopify’s conclusion: “The path forward is to optimize for both.” Google’s guidance reinforces that logic: generative AI search still relies on core Search ranking and quality systems. Retailers should protect organic SEO reach while tightening product descriptions, attributes, compatibility details, reviews, pricing and returns. The near-term winner will be the brand whose product information is easiest for people and machines to understand.
