India’s coastal tourism is set for a major upgrade, with the World Bank approving $212 million (₹1,770 crore) to fund the SHORE project. The initiative will focus on sustainable tourism development across Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, aiming to create over 100,000 jobs while enhancing climate resilience and local livelihoods.

SHORE—Sustainable Coastal and Ocean Development for Resilient Economies—targets ecotourism, mangrove restoration, and plastic waste reduction. It also includes infrastructure upgrades in beach towns, capacity-building for local entrepreneurs, and digital engagement for tourists.

“This project will transform India’s coastal belt into a model of inclusive and sustainable tourism,” said Auguste Tano Kouamé, World Bank Country Director for India. “It’s about jobs, climate, and community.”

India’s coastal states contribute nearly 30% of the country’s tourism GDP, yet face mounting environmental pressures. According to the Ministry of Tourism, domestic coastal tourism grew 18% last year, driven by post-pandemic travel demand and regional campaigns.

The SHORE initiative will also support digital platforms for eco-tourism bookings, real-time visitor analytics, and multilingual content to attract international travelers. Pilot programs in Puducherry and Udupi are already underway, with early signs of increased footfall and local business growth.
