132 Uber has launched a pilot programme in India that allows drivers to use in-app video recording during rides, marking a significant safety upgrade for one of the company’s largest markets. The feature, currently being tested in select cities, is designed to prevent misconduct, support evidence-based investigations, and strengthen trust across the platform. The in-app tool activates the driver’s front-facing camera, enabling them to record footage directly through the Uber app without needing third-party hardware. Videos are encrypted, stored securely, and can only be accessed by Uber’s safety team if a safety-related report is filed by either party. Uber emphasised that the feature has been built with privacy safeguards, ensuring footage remains inaccessible to both riders and drivers after the ride. The company said the move aligns with its broader global mission to introduce technology-led safety interventions, including audio recording, real-time ride tracking, and number-masking. The pilot arrives at a time when Indian mobility platforms are under increased scrutiny regarding passenger safety, with regulators pushing for stronger accountability and reporting systems. Early feedback from drivers suggests that video recording could serve as a deterrent to misconduct, while giving them additional protection against false allegations. Uber plans to expand the pilot based on adoption, regulatory inputs, and safety outcomes.
