357 Google has announced a $15 billion investment to build a state-of-the-art AI and data infrastructure hub in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh — a move set to accelerate India’s digital and artificial intelligence ecosystem. The project, which includes a 1-gigawatt data centre, cloud infrastructure, and AI development facilities, will serve as Google’s primary base for AI research and deployment in South Asia. CEO Sundar Pichai personally briefed Prime Minister Narendra Modi about the initiative during a virtual meeting, outlining its potential to create thousands of jobs and expand AI innovation for businesses and startups across India. Pichai said the investment reflects Google’s long-term commitment to “partnering with India on its digital future,” adding that the new hub will power advanced Gemini AI models, Google Cloud services, and regional AI applications built for sectors such as education, healthcare, and agriculture. The Visakhapatnam AI hub will also integrate sustainability features, running on renewable energy to align with Google’s global goal of achieving net-zero carbon operations by 2030. Experts describe the investment as a landmark moment for India’s technology infrastructure, positioning the country as a key player in global AI supply chains and cloud innovation. It also signals Google’s confidence in India’s talent base and regulatory environment for data and AI-led transformation.
