282 The Tech Mahindra Global Chess League (GCL), collaborating with FIDE and Chess.com, has launched an unprecedented initiative—GCL Contenders 2025—to open the world of franchise chess to aspiring players globally. The two-month tournament, running from late August through mid-September, is open to both amateurs and professionals via a multi-tiered digital competition. Registrations began on August 28, 2025. Winners across three categories—Men, Women, and U21—will receive a rare opportunity to serve as official ambassadors in GCL Season 3, set to start December 13, 2025. The winning contenders will compete alongside chess superstars in a franchise-style league, televised and streamed globally. Peeyush Dubey, Chairperson of GCL, said, “With GCL Contenders, we are crafting a landmark moment—leveling the playing field for grassroots talent to stand toe-to-toe with elite grandmasters—a global spark for the chess community.” FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich and Chess.com’s Chief Chess Officer Danny Rensch emphasized how the initiative builds on the league’s inclusive, competitive ecosystem and its ability to create new pathways for fan engagement and player development in multiple regions. Spanning six time zones—from India to the Americas, Europe, and Australasia—the GCL Contenders showcases how tech and innovation are opening grassroots chess to the world stage.
