363 India’s ambition to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games took a significant step forward this week as a delegation of officials conducted detailed inspections of potential venues in Ahmedabad. The city, which has emerged as the frontrunner in India’s bid, showcased its sporting infrastructure to the visiting panel—underscoring the country’s readiness to stage a multi-sport event of global scale. The inspection team, comprising members of the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) and Indian Olympic Association (IOA), toured key facilities including the Narendra Modi Stadium complex, indoor arenas, and athlete accommodation sites. The visit focused on assessing infrastructure quality, logistics readiness, and compliance with CGF technical standards. Ahmedabad’s pitch rests heavily on its integrated sports infrastructure, upgraded transport connectivity, and hotel capacity. “Ahmedabad has the advantage of existing world-class venues and the ability to expand rapidly,” said an IOA official familiar with the bid process. The city is also leveraging its experience hosting marquee cricket events, including the 2023 ICC World Cup final. India last hosted the Commonwealth Games in 2010, an event marred by delays and controversy. Officials are keen to project the 2030 bid as a symbol of operational excellence and financial transparency. The CGF delegation’s feedback will be a critical factor in determining whether India advances to the formal bidding stage later this year. The 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games saw participation from 71 nations and territories, with over 6,800 athletes—scale that India is confident it can replicate and surpass. If successful, the 2030 Games could mark a turning point for India’s global sports profile—positioning the country as a hub for mega-event hosting and sports tourism in the decade ahead.
