Google is reportedly testing an “Import AI chats” feature in its Gemini AI assistant that would let users bring conversation histories from rival platforms like ChatGPT, Claude and others into Gemini, reducing switching friction and helping continuity of workflow, though it’s still in beta and not officially released

Google appears to be developing a new feature for its Gemini AI assistant that could make it easier for users to switch from rival chatbots without losing valuable context and conversation history. According to reports, the feature — currently spotted in beta builds of Gemini — is being labelled “Import AI chats.”

The proposed tool is intended to let users transfer their existing chat histories from other AI platforms, including ChatGPT and Claude, into Gemini by downloading their old conversations and uploading them into the new interface. This could help preserve continuity and eliminate the need to start fresh when moving between AI services.

The option has been observed in early versions of Gemini’s web interface under the attachments menu, hinting at an upload-based workflow. However, major questions remain, especially around compatibility: source platforms don’t all support standard export formats, meaning the usefulness of the import tool could depend on wider ecosystem support.

Beyond just lowering the “switching cost” of migrating to a new AI assistant, such a feature could signal a shift in competition among chatbot makers. By making it easier to bring existing conversational data into Gemini, Google might be trying to attract users who are hesitant to leave their current platform due to the loss of accumulated AI context — including ongoing work, personal preferences and memory cues.

Details such as which formats will be supported, how imported chats will be stored or if imported data might be used to personalize Gemini’s responses or training remain unclear. Google has not yet officially confirmed the rollout timeline or broader availability of the feature.
