A breakthrough technology known as “capture bags” may soon help scientists and space agencies detect and capture asteroids for study and potential resource extraction. Developed as part of evolving planetary defence strategies, these inflatable, balloon-like structures can envelop space objects—allowing safer manoeuvring, retrieval, and observation in orbit.

Unlike traditional spacecraft that rely on mechanical arms or landing modules, capture bags offer a non-invasive method to trap smaller asteroids by inflating around them. The flexible design adapts to different shapes and trajectories, reducing the risk of deflection or fragmentation during interception.

Space researchers are particularly interested in this approach for two reasons:

  • Planetary safety – By catching asteroids before they pose a threat to Earth, agencies like NASA can redirect or study them safely.
  • Space mining – Capture bags could help secure asteroid samples rich in metals or water, making them valuable for future missions or fuel generation.

This technology is still under testing, with several prototypes being explored in low-gravity simulations. The idea is to integrate AI-powered navigation and real-time tracking systems into the bags to autonomously locate, target, and seal around small space rocks.

As space exploration pivots toward sustainability and security, such soft capture mechanisms could change how we interact with near-Earth objects—blending science, safety, and commercial potential.
