471 OpenAI has published a new framework to quantify and reduce political bias in its AI systems, including ChatGPT and GPT-4, as part of a broader push for transparency and model accountability. The company said the move reflects growing concerns that generative AI could influence political opinions, particularly ahead of global elections in 2025–26. The new evaluation system introduces “bias sensitivity metrics” — tools designed to detect whether AI models disproportionately favour or reject certain political ideologies or parties when asked policy- or election-related questions. OpenAI said that while its internal audits found such bias to be “rare but real,” measurable safeguards were necessary to maintain user trust. The methodology draws on cross-national datasets covering U.S., U.K., and Indian political contexts and applies controlled prompts to gauge consistency and neutrality. The company has also begun collaborating with independent researchers and ethics labs to validate the results. OpenAI stated, “Our goal is not to make AI apolitical, but to make it transparent, testable, and accountable in how it represents differing perspectives.” The new framework will also be used to retrain models and improve content moderation systems. The initiative comes as regulators in the U.S. and EU push for clearer standards around AI neutrality and misinformation.
