427 Instagram is rolling out new Meta AI voice translation and search capabilities in five Indian languages: Hindi, Bengali, Marathi, Telugu, and Tamil. The features are powered by Meta’s Llama-2 large language model and are designed to enhance the platform’s accessibility and utility across India’s diverse linguistic landscape. The voice search feature allows users to ask spoken questions in supported Indian languages, enabling more intuitive interactions with Meta AI. Meanwhile, the AI translation capability provides real-time voice-to-text translations, allowing users to communicate across languages within the app. Meta is also testing reels generation using Meta AI, marking a deeper integration of generative AI into its content creation workflows. The company emphasised that these features reflect Meta’s long-term investment in building regionally relevant AI tools. India is the first country where Meta is rolling out these voice AI features. Instagram’s growing AI layer complements its broader strategy to embed Meta AI assistants across apps like WhatsApp, Messenger, and Facebook. Meta has been steadily expanding the scope of Llama-based tools and bringing AI-native interactions to user-facing interfaces. With this rollout, Instagram aims to make its platform more inclusive for Indian users who prefer regional languages, further solidifying Meta’s foothold in one of its largest markets. The new tools are expected to unlock deeper engagement across rural and semi-urban user bases, where voice-first and vernacular experiences are preferred.
