123 Microsoft will discontinue support for its Copilot AI chatbot on WhatsApp starting January 9, 2025, according to an official announcement. Initially launched as an experimental preview in 2024, the WhatsApp integration allowed users to chat with Microsoft Copilot through a dedicated number. The pilot offered users a glimpse into AI-driven productivity via messaging platforms, enabling them to query data, write emails, summarise documents, and get real-time help. However, the company now states it is ending the preview to focus on delivering more cohesive Copilot experiences directly within Microsoft’s own ecosystem—including Windows 11, Edge browser, Microsoft 365 apps, and Azure services. “We’re wrapping up the preview experience on WhatsApp, but Copilot will continue to be available in more deeply integrated ways,” a Microsoft spokesperson confirmed. This move is part of Microsoft’s broader AI consolidation strategy, where Copilot becomes an embedded assistant rather than a third-party chatbot. The company has recently unveiled Copilot Pro for consumers and Copilot Studio for enterprise customisation—marking a shift from experimental chat integrations to fully productised offerings. Although the WhatsApp integration will end, Microsoft hints at potential future integrations with other messaging and communication platforms, depending on enterprise demand and product readiness. Users who relied on the WhatsApp version are encouraged to migrate to Copilot in Windows or Edge, or access it through copilot.microsoft.com.
