138 Ads on Instagram are slipping into our feeds so seamlessly that users are struggling to recognize them. A new study published in Frontiers and highlighted by El País reveals how social platforms have refined ad integration, making promotion nearly indistinguishable from genuine content . Researchers led by Maike Hübner from the University of Twente found that Instagram’s native ad design—often aligning closely with organic posts—creates a “sliding camouflaged effect.” In a simulation of Instagram feeds, participants flanked 21 organic posts with eight ads. The result: many users overlooked the ads entirely . Why this matters: hidden advertising erodes user trust and challenges ethical standards. As Hübner puts it, “Platforms have succeeded in integrating [ads] more seamlessly… we scroll on autopilot, and that’s when ads slip through”. The more organic the ad looks—mimicking influencers’ posts or friends’ updates—the less likely users are to identify it as advertising. Prior studies on native advertising show reduced ad recognition; only 17% to 27% of readers accurately recognize advertorial content, even when labeled. Professor Johnson at the University of Florida adds, “These posts were viewed more positively because they are seen as more credible… traditional ads were least trusted” . As social feeds blur lines, urgent solutions like stronger ad labeling, AI-powered detection of native ads, and improved media literacy are needed to protect users and maintain platform integrity.
