The timing fits Figma’s effort to expand its collaborative design platform into a broader AI product-development stack. It already offers Figma Make, a prompt-to-app tool, and has strengthened connections between design files and coding environments. Adding Bud’s team brings engineers experienced in AI-generated apps and agents, although Figma has not detailed their future roles.

The acquisition also exposes the cost of consolidation in the fast-moving AI coding market. Bud’s technology may continue inside a larger platform, but standalone users received an 11-day migration window from the July 7 announcement. The company warned that hosted projects “will no longer remain deployed” after July 18.

For Figma, the commercial logic is clear. First-quarter 2026 revenue rose 46% year over year to $333.4 million, while approximately 60% of customers spending more than $100,000 annually used Figma Make every week. Chief Financial Officer Praveer Melwani cited “promising early traction on AI monetization.”

The immediate priority is operational: Bud and Orchids customers should export code, verify dependencies, move repositories to GitHub or local storage, and test a new hosting provider before the cutoff. Teams should also preserve environment variables, deployment settings and documentation that may not travel with source files.

The longer-term test is whether Figma can integrate Bud’s app-building expertise without reproducing the abrupt product-continuity risk now facing developers. Its design-to-code strategy is stronger, but customer trust will depend on migration support as much as AI capability.
