TikTok’s latest headache did not break on the platform itself. It arrived, instead, via an email to advertisers.

In a note obtained by Adweek, TikTok acknowledged that a power-related outage at a U.S. data center disrupted ad delivery, leading to missing ads, incomplete features, and underperforming campaigns. The company stressed it was monitoring the situation and restoring services. For advertisers, that reassurance landed late—and thin.

Media buyers reported widespread under-delivery, with some campaigns failing to spend as planned and others ending early. As budgets stalled on TikTok, dollars flowed elsewhere, pushing up CPMs on rival platforms. For agencies managing performance commitments, the problem was not just lost impressions but broken assumptions.

This matters because TikTok’s pitch to advertisers has matured. The platform is no longer sold as an experimental brand channel. It is positioned as core media infrastructure. Core infrastructure is expected to work.

The timing compounds the issue. TikTok’s U.S. operations are already under scrutiny, navigating regulatory pressure, corporate restructuring, and heightened sensitivity around data governance. Against that backdrop, a basic operational failure—power, servers, delivery—hits harder than it otherwise would.

Advertisers are pragmatic. Most accept that outages happen. What they watch is pattern, response, and transparency. TikTok’s email confirmed the issue, but it also reinforced a quiet anxiety in the market: that the platform’s rapid growth has outpaced the resilience of its ad tech stack.

For now, no mass exodus is underway. TikTok remains culturally dominant and commercially powerful. But the episode sharpens a line that advertisers are drawing more clearly in 2026: scale without reliability is no longer enough.

In a market where every major platform claims performance, the real differentiator may be something far less glamorous—whether the ads actually run.
