TL;DR:

HUL’s Q1 revenue rose 10%, but reported profit fell 2.2% as a prior-year tax credit and margin pressure weighed. Volume growth remained healthy at 5%, making cost control and margin recovery the central test for FY27.

Article:

Hindustan Unilever’s Q1 FY27 revenue accelerated at its fastest pace in 13 quarters, but reported profit fell and margins narrowed, showing that demand recovery has not yet translated fully into earnings. Consolidated revenue from operations rose 10.2% year on year to ₹17,149 crore, while reported profit after tax slipped 2.2% to ₹2,680 crore. Profit attributable to shareholders fell 3% to ₹2,673 crore. The year-earlier quarter included a one-off tax credit, which depressed the latest headline comparison.

Underlying sales grew 10%, split evenly between 5% volume growth and pricing. EBITDA rose 8% to ₹3,947 crore, but the EBITDA margin contracted 40 basis points to 23%, as commodity and operating costs absorbed part of the revenue gain. HUL expects commodity volatility and near-term inflationary pressure to continue.

Home Care led with 14% underlying sales growth, its strongest performance in three years. Beauty & Wellbeing grew 12%, Foods 7% and Personal Care 4%. Personal Care volumes declined in the low single digits as palm-oil inflation forced price-led growth, underlining the uneven quality of the recovery across categories.

Chief executive Priya Nair said underlying demand “remained stable during the quarter”. HUL expects FY27 to improve on FY26 through portfolio and channel changes, while maintaining its medium-term consolidated EBITDA-margin guidance of 22.5% to 23.5%.

HUL shares fell as much as 5% after the results. The reaction suggests investors want proof that higher volumes, premiumisation and pricing can rebuild margins, not merely expand sales. Investors should watch the volume-price mix and EBITDA margin next quarter; those figures, not headline revenue alone, will show whether HUL’s recovery is becoming profitable.
