ByteDance, the Chinese tech giant behind TikTok and CapCut, has launched Seedream 5.0, its latest generative image-editing model positioned to challenge Google’s Nano Banana Pro in the rapidly evolving AI image generation market.

“Think Nano Banana Pro, but cheaper,” — Marketing description shared on CapCut’s official social account comparing Seedream 5.0 with Google’s Nano Banana Pro

The company says Seedream 5.0 delivers stronger contextual reasoning, higher accuracy and detailed edit controls, enabling users to selectively refine parts of an image without re-creating the entire scene — a workflow advantage that has become essential in modern creative AI tools.

ByteDance highlighted the comparison to Nano Banana Pro on social platforms, with marketing messaging framing Seedream 5.0 as a more affordable alternative without compromising capability.

The model is currently available for beta testing on ByteDance’s CapCut and Jimeng platforms — catering to both global creators and its domestic audience.

The launch comes alongside other Chinese AI innovations, including Alibaba Cloud’s Qwen-Image-2.0, underscoring growing Chinese competition with US-based AI models in generative image creation and editing technology.

Industry observers say this escalation reflects broader strategic competition between American and Chinese tech companies as each seeks dominance in foundational AI models used by millions of creators, small businesses and enterprises worldwide.
