46 United Parcel Service (UPS) gears up to bolster its pilot workforce by over 300 members in the wake of securing a significant contract with the United States Postal Service (USPS) as its primary air cargo provider. UPS clinched the coveted role on April 1, 2024, marking a notable shift from FedEx, which held the position for over two decades. With the USPS deal in place, UPS anticipates a surge in workload, necessitating additional pilot resources to meet the heightened demand. The union stated, “The initial projected estimate for hiring is expected to be 300+ additional crew members, which is subject to adjustment once the network plan for the additional USPS volume is finalized.” This proactive recruitment drive aligns with UPS’s strategic response to efficiently manage the impending workload surge resulting from the USPS partnership. In a strategic move in 2023, UPS offered early retirement buyouts to some of its pilots amid declining demand for air cargo services. Aero Crew News reported that 157 Captains and 10 First Officers were extended early retirement severance packages amounting to $357,000 each. UPS’s contract with the USPS is slated to commence on September 30, 2024, spanning a minimum base term of five and a half years, underscoring the long-term commitment and strategic significance of the partnership.
