Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, envisions a future where a neural device can visualize thoughts and facilitate telepathic communication, resembling a scene straight out of a science-fiction film.

According to Altman, neural devices will harness artificial intelligence advancements to project individuals’ thoughts as a word arrangement directly in their field of vision. During an episode of the Joe Rogan Experience podcast, Altman suggested that these devices could eventually enable people to communicate their thoughts with external tools and even with other individuals through telepathy.

Altman illustrated how a combination of a neural interface with advanced AI models like GPT-5 or 6 could display words such as “soup” in the user’s line of sight, describing it as a valuable tool with significant potential. He emphasized the inevitability of this technological progression.

Beyond OpenAI, other companies are also exploring neural devices, including Elon Musk’s Neuralink, which has been actively developing similar technologies for some time. However, ethical concerns have been raised recently, particularly regarding the treatment of monkeys in Neuralink’s research, raising questions about the darker implications of this emerging technology.

While the concept might evoke comparisons to the world of the movie “The Matrix,” Altman believes that society is already somewhat headed in that direction. He draws parallels with people’s reliance on smartphones, noting that being without a phone puts individuals at a disadvantage in today’s world. Altman suggests that as virtual reality technology continues to advance, some individuals may become so engrossed in it that they may be reluctant to disconnect, similar to the attachment people have to their smartphones. He sees this as the preliminary phase of a potential fusion between humans and technology.
