160 Bboxx, the data-driven super platform dedicated to transforming lives and unlocking potential across Africa, has announced a strategic relocation of its Headquarters from London to Kigali, underscoring its commitment as an Africa-first company. The decision, revealed today at the UK-Rwanda Business Forum in Kigali, reflects Bboxx’s pledge to serve, innovate, and grow within the continent’s heart. In tandem with this move, Bboxx plans to train nearly 500 more Rwandans over the next 5 years and invest USD 100 million in the country. This announcement aligns with the Company’s ambitious goal of reaching 36 million people by 2028, buoyed by a USD 100 million partnership with Kuwaiti investment company EnerTech, unveiled in December 2023. Since its inception in 2010 by three graduates from Imperial College, Bboxx has expanded significantly, initially focusing on addressing energy poverty in Africa. With its first on-the-ground operations launched in Rwanda, the Company has since extended its footprint to 11 African markets, providing electricity to over 10% of Rwandan households and offering a diverse range of essential products and services, including solar energy, clean cooking solutions, water pumps, smartphones, and electric vehicles. Rwanda’s remarkable modernization over the past two decades positions it as an ideal base for Bboxx. With its conducive business environment, including initiatives like the Kigali International Financial Centre and the forthcoming Start-up Act, Rwanda offers a favorable landscape for growth and investment. Moreover, Kigali’s burgeoning pool of tech and engineering talent, coupled with excellent connectivity via Rwandair, makes it a strategic hub for Bboxx to manage its operations across 11 countries, positioning itself at the nexus of Africa’s evolving energy and technology sectors. Francis Gatare, Chief Executive Officer of the Rwanda Development Board, lauded Bboxx’s decision, emphasizing Rwanda’s commitment to fostering smart, sustainable investments and providing a conducive ecosystem for innovation and expansion. Closer proximity to customers enables Bboxx to better understand and address the unique needs of households and businesses it serves, reinforcing its commitment to community-centered solutions. Mansoor Hamayun, CEO and Co-Founder of Bboxx, hailed the move to Kigali as a testament to the company’s dedication to being an Africa-first, data-driven super platform, driving transformation at an unprecedented scale. As Rwanda’s transformational journey aligns with the values of the Commonwealth, with President Paul Kagame serving as the Commonwealth Chair-in-Office, the UK’s partnership with Rwanda remains pivotal. Omar Daair, High Commissioner to Rwanda, affirmed the UK’s commitment to supporting African innovation, applauding Bboxx’s relocation as a testament to the strong partnership between the UK and Rwanda. Bboxx’s move underscores its collaborative efforts with African governments, including Rwanda, in electrifying the continent and empowering remote communities economically. It signifies Bboxx’s vision for a brighter, sustainable African future, driven by strong partnerships and a commitment to innovation and impact.
