Walmart is embarking on a new phase of innovation by deploying 19 autonomous forklifts across four advanced distribution centers (DCs) following a successful 16-month proof of concept. The decision reflects Walmart’s commitment to evaluating the benefits of automation for both associates and operations, with potential expansion on the horizon.

The collaboration with Fox Robotics, the developer of the autonomous forklifts, has yielded promising insights. Automation, according to Walmart, isn’t just advantageous for business efficiency but also enhances the working environment for associates.

At facility 6020, where associates are being trained to operate FoxBot autonomous forklifts, the integration of automation has led to significant progress and increased productivity. Walmart’s investment in Fox Robotics, resulting in a minority stake, underscores the company’s confidence in the technology’s long-term potential.

The FoxBot forklifts seamlessly complement Walmart’s existing automated storage and retrieval system, facilitating the unloading of trucks and the efficient movement of pallets. Leveraging AI-powered machine vision and dynamic planning, the forklifts ensure safe and precise operations.

For associates, this transition represents a shift in roles from manual pallet unloading to strategic oversight akin to playing Tetris. Associates now act as conductors, orchestrating the most effective unloading strategies based on their expertise. Walmart observes this evolution as associates transform into mentors, a development that underscores the positive impact of automation on workforce dynamics.
