Our lean marketing team boosted website traffic using ChatGPT for SEO (and a bunch of other programmatic SEO techniques).

AI tools are all the rage now. I thought what’s the point if we just keep doom scrolling instead of using it.

Top 3 Lessons that Work

Here are top 3 lessons I learned in 30 days:

1) Every conversation with ChatGPT is with a newborn baby

It has no context for anything you want it to do.

Detailed prompts work 10x better.

2) Instantly fill roles in the team

“You are now an expert SEO”

Then add constraints.

“Apply MECE framework during topic clustering”

3) Outrank article

Copy paste this prompt (but don’t copy paste the result):

“You are a very proficient SEO and high end copy writer. You can write content so good in English that it can outrank other websites. Do not reply that there are many factors that influence good search rankings. The URL <insert-URL-here> of an article is what we need to outrank in Google. Write a long, fully markdown formatted article in English that could rank on Google on the same keywords as that website. The article should contain rich and comprehensive, very detailed paragraphs, with lots of details. Use bullet points and tables to increase readability wherever apt. Use MECE framework to exhaustively cover all topics central to the article. Do not echo my prompt. Do not remind me what I asked you for. Do not apologize. Do not self-reference. Do not use generic filler phrases. Use useful subheadings with keyword-rich titles. Get to the point precisely and accurate. Do not explain what and why, just give me your best possible article.”

First result won’t be perfect.

But it’ll give you a unique perspectives in how you can further use ChatGPT for SEO.

And done >>> perfect.

More Ideas on Using ChatGPT for SEO

ChatGPT can help you generate more creative content ideas, optimize your website by doing quality checks for free, and thus improve your search rankings. Here are some ways we used ChatGPT for SEO:

1. Generate Content Ideas

We asked ChatGPT to provide us with a list of topics related to our niche. Then we provided it lists of keywords that had a high search volume but low competition (HVLC keywords).

We asked ChatGPT to cluster those keywords so that they’re mutually exclusive and collectively exhaustive (MECE). We further asked it to classify clusters by informational vs commercial intent.

In my experience, detailed prompts work 10x better in getting the right answers.

2. Optimize Your Website

We asked ChatGPT to provide suggestions on how to improve a specific article’s content, structure, and keywords.

We updated our content strategy much faster having this knowledge.

3. Improve Your Search Rankings

ChatGPT can provide you with high-quality content but it’s not advisable to directly copy paste it. Understanding of the search keyword intent on which the content is focused is actually a lot more than brainlessly churning out articles using ChatGPT.

Before You Go

Remember, ChatGPT is a powerful tool for everyone, not just growth marketers. But it’s not just about using the next big hack and then relaxing. Keep in mind that any new strategies you try make need to drive meaningfully traffic that eventually translates into sales.
