Kenneth Chenault, the departing Chief Executive of American Express Co, will be joining Airbnb Inc’s board as its first non-affiliated independent director, according to Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky. This marks the first addition to Airbnb’s board since its founding in 2008.

Chenault’s appointment comes shortly after he was appointed to Facebook Inc’s board, becoming the first non-white director on the social media giant’s board. Chenault is set to leave American Express on February 1, concluding a nearly 17-year tenure leading the top U.S. card issuer by spending.

In a letter to a group of Airbnb hosts, Chesky praised Chenault’s leadership at American Express, stating that he has built one of the most successful trust-based companies globally. This appointment underscores Airbnb’s commitment to diversifying its leadership and bringing in experienced voices from various sectors.
