On Thursday, Claudine Gay, a dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, was named the new president of Harvard University. She is the first African American to hold the position at the esteemed institution.  Gay, 52, is the only second woman to be chosen to lead the Cambridge, Massachusetts, institution.

“Claudine is a remarkable leader who is profoundly devoted to sustaining and enhancing Harvard’s academic excellence,” said Penny Pritzker, chair of Harvard’s presidential search committee.
