During his inaugural three-day visit to India, Foreign Minister Hasan Mahmud of Bangladesh embarked on diplomatic engagements aimed at bolstering bilateral ties between the two nations. This visit marks Mahmud’s first official trip to India since assuming office as Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister.

The Ministry of External Affairs of India underscored the significance of Mahmud’s visit, emphasizing the prioritization of bilateral relations between Bangladesh and India. On the morning of February 7, Mahmud held discussions with National Security Adviser Ajit Doval at Sardar Patel Bhavan, following which he paid tribute at Mahatma Gandhi’s tomb and the Rajghat Memorial Square.

Addressing reporters, Foreign Minister Mahmud highlighted the unprecedented development witnessed in Bangladesh under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, while also acknowledging India’s notable advancements under Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Mahmud emphasized the imperative of maintaining regional political stability and peace to sustain the trajectory of progress in both nations.

Discussions also centered on the rehabilitation of Rohingya refugees with their full rights in their native Myanmar, along with cooperation strategies amidst the current regional landscape. The meeting was attended by Bangladesh’s High Commissioner to India, Mustafizur Rahman, as well as officials from the Ministry of External Affairs and the Bangladesh High Commission.

Later in the day, Mahmud is scheduled to meet with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar at Hyderabad House in Delhi. Additionally, the minister will deliver an address at the Vivekananda Foundation and engage in various bilateral meetings aimed at enhancing cooperation between Bangladesh and India.
