Paywatch, a prominent enterprise earned wage access (EWA) solution in Asia, continues its robust growth by expanding into Indonesia and the Philippines. This strategic move is bolstered by a pivotal partnership with VISA, aimed at enhancing financial literacy and facilitating safe money transfer services.

The extension of Paywatch’s presence in Southeast Asia, encompassing emerging markets like Indonesia and the Philippines, solidifies its position as the largest EWA provider in the region. Currently serving more than 300 employers and 500,000 employees across these markets, Paywatch has processed over $4 million monthly in earned wage access over the past year.

Richard Kim, co-founder and CEO of Paywatch, highlights the company’s commitment to supporting frontline workers, who are particularly susceptible to challenging economic conditions. By granting them access to earned wages, Paywatch empowers them to better manage their finances, leading to improved mental and financial well-being. Looking ahead to 2024, Paywatch is actively exploring entry into additional Asian markets, with a specific focus on Thailand and Vietnam. The company also aims to deepen collaborations with leading banks and other financial entities.

Paywatch’s collaboration with VISA fortifies its network of banking and payment partners in the region. Notably, Paywatch stands out as the only multi-country bank-backed EWA service provider, enjoying support from global financial institutions such as Hong Leong Bank, OCBC, and UOB. Furthermore, Paywatch holds the distinction of being the sole Southeast Asian startup to secure funding from prestigious entities like the Vanderbilt University endowment and the University of Illinois Foundation.

Venturing into Indonesia and the Philippines addresses the high attrition rates in these countries, driven by poor job satisfaction and pay disparities. Additionally, a significant portion of the population in both nations remains unbanked or underbanked, facing financial challenges such as cash flow problems and debt traps. Paywatch’s EWA solution emerges as a valuable tool to address these issues, providing employees with access to their earned salaries anytime and anywhere.

In the Philippines, Paywatch initiated operations in November, forming partnerships with key players like Wilmar International, Shang Properties, and Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts. Meanwhile, in Indonesia, Paywatch, in collaboration with a local banking partner, introduced the first bank-backed EWA service in December, making strides in the local manufacturing and financial sectors.

Aligned with its mission to empower frontline workers, Paywatch forged a significant partnership with VISA, integrating financial literacy content from VISA into its app. This integration aims to equip customers, primarily frontline workers, with essential skills and knowledge for effective personal finance management. Notably, over 40% of active users have already engaged with the financial literacy content.

Furthermore, as part of the collaboration, VISA’s money transfer solution, Visa Direct, will be seamlessly integrated into the Paywatch platform. This integration simplifies and secures the process of transferring money abroad, providing frontline workers supporting families across borders with a user-friendly and reliable solution for sending money home. The joint efforts of Paywatch and VISA signify a pivotal step towards fostering financial freedom and resilience among frontline workers in Southeast Asia.
