207 Ghana’s film sector is receiving significant support from the government, as President Nana Akufo-Addo announces plans to introduce a new tax rebate system for film productions. Under the new law, Ghana will offer a 20% tax rebate for strategic film productions, along with several other film financing reliefs, including exemptions on import duties for film production equipment. Additionally, there will be exemptions on port taxes and other cash levies typically required upfront by authorities. Local corporate entities that financially support the sector can also benefit from these incentives. During his State of the Nation address in the Ghanaian parliament, President Akufo-Addo emphasized his government’s commitment to supporting the production of world-class content and films, as well as increasing cinema infrastructure in Ghana and across the continent. He highlighted that these incentives should make Ghana an attractive destination for film production. Under the leadership of Juliet Yaa Asantewa Asante, the National Film Authority of Ghana has launched various initiatives aimed at positioning Ghana as a leading film hub in Africa. The “Shoot in Ghana” campaign has attracted international attention and productions like the NFL Super Bowl spot Born to Play, produced by TD Afrique Films. Juliet Yaa Asantewa Asante, CEO of the National Film Authority, welcomed the President’s announcement, stating that the forthcoming tax incentive policy will strengthen Ghana’s position in the global film ecosystem and make it more attractive to filmmakers, solidifying its status as a cinematic powerhouse internationally.
