eBay is marking the first-ever Recommerce Day today, coinciding with the release of its 2024 Recommerce Report. Now in its fourth year, the report has expanded its scope beyond eBay’s community to assess global consumer trends and sentiments around pre-loved shopping. Drawing insights from over 28,000 individuals worldwide, the report sheds light on the growing significance of recommerce in the retail landscape.

As part of the celebration, eBay has teamed up with acclaimed actress and sustainability advocate Alicia Silverstone to champion the benefits of recommerce. Silverstone, known for her commitment to environmental causes, emphasizes the importance of conscious and sustainable shopping practices, citing recommerce as a key contributor to reducing waste.

“I’m so excited that people are getting more involved in the circular economy – both buying and selling. I’m conscious about everything I buy and it’s why I shop pre-loved on eBay,” said Alicia Silverstone. “Recommerce brings me so much joy because I know I’m not contributing to the waste that harms our planet.“

eBay’s CEO and President, Jamie Iannone, highlighted the company’s commitment to driving the circular economy through innovative tools and technologies. “Our team is making it easier than ever to buy and sell used or refurbished items on the marketplace,” said Iannone, emphasizing the aim of Recommerce Day to raise awareness about the benefits of shopping sustainably.

The 2024 Recommerce Report underscores the growing appeal of pre-loved shopping, with consumers increasingly seeking unique items and value while also recognizing its positive environmental impact. According to the report, over 70% of global consumers surveyed plan to buy pre-loved goods this year, with younger demographics, particularly those aged 18-24, leading the trend towards recommerce.
