Elon Musk suggested testing Tesla’s advanced driver-assistance package in China through the deployment of robotaxis during his recent visit to the country, as reported by the state-backed China Daily newspaper on Wednesday, citing sources.

According to the newspaper, Chinese officials welcomed the idea, expressing a desire for Tesla to conduct robotaxi tests in the country and hoping it would serve as a positive example. However, immediate approval for the widespread use of Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) functions was not granted.

Before fully rolling out FSD functions, Tesla must obtain approval to collect and transfer data necessary for training its driver-assistance features. This issue was reportedly not extensively discussed during Musk’s visit.

The report from China Daily follows Elon Musk’s recent visit to Beijing, where he met with Chinese Premier Li Qiang. During the trip, Musk aimed to discuss the rollout of FSD and the possibility of obtaining government approvals for data transfer crucial for autonomous vehicle development, as previously reported by Reuters.
