303 Muscat – The Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology (MTCIT) is accepting bids for the development, management and operations of water taxi and maritime salvage services in Oman. Interested local and international companies, as well as specialised investors in maritime transportation services, are invited to submit an expression of interest (EOI) for the two services. MTCIT stated that EoIs should include a comprehensive operational model for both services, encompassing a business plan, marketing strategy, investment plans and strategy to enhance in-country value. Additionally, an economic feasibility study must be submitted, including an analysis of service delivery costs, estimated revenues and projected profits. The documentation should demonstrate the company and employees’ expertise in developing, managing and operating water taxi and marine salvage services. The deadline for submitting bids is August 31. In 2022, MTCIT issued Ministerial Decision No 33/2022 defining regulations for water taxis. According to the decision, water taxis must not be older than 15 years and should be registered in Oman. Owners of water taxis must provide a classification certificate, life raft certificate and comprehensive insurance policy for the taxi driver and passengers. They must also display the taxi route, hire technically qualified and licensed crewmembers, follow weather alerts and instructions issued by the Maritime Authority, and utilise the best available technologies. Furthermore, owners must provide a berthing site for boats. MTCIT said this initiative presents a significant opportunity for interested companies and investors to contribute to Oman’s water transportation sector and play a vital role in the development, management and operations of water taxi and maritime salvage services.
