175 Volkswagen AG (VWAGY) has sought the expertise of Sanjay Lal, a former executive from Tesla, Rivian, and Google, to address software challenges within its electric vehicle (EV) division. According to a report by Electrek, the automaker’s Cariad software unit has encountered performance issues over the past few years, causing delays in the launch of Porsche and Audi electric models. These difficulties were reportedly a contributing factor to the departure of former VW Group CEO Herbert Diess. Lal, known for his leadership roles at Tesla, Rivian, and Google, has been appointed to lead a new software design hub within the Cariad division, aimed at future EV development. His recruitment follows Volkswagen’s decision to scale back production at two German plants in response to declining demand. Under the leadership of Oliver Blume, the newly appointed CEO of VW, the company is prioritizing the overhaul of its EV software development and delivery processes. This strategic move is considered essential for Volkswagen to effectively compete with industry frontrunners such as Tesla and Rivian. Lal’s software design hub at Cariad will initially concentrate on creating software for upcoming Audi and VW models. In the long term, the unit’s output is expected to benefit various brands under the Volkswagen Group. As the significance of software in vehicle design continues to grow, automakers like Volkswagen are making substantial investments in this area to meet the increasing consumer demand for advanced technology and features.
