UK regulators are launching an investigation into Unilever to assess whether the company has exaggerated the environmental credentials of some of its products, particularly claims related to their ‘green’ and ‘natural’ qualities. The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) expressed concerns about the packaging, marketing, and imagery used by Unilever, which owns brands like Dove and Lynx. The CMA is specifically looking into the transparency of claims regarding product recyclability and potential exaggerations about the environmental friendliness of certain items.

Sarah Cardell, the CEO of the CMA, stated that the evidence they’ve seen has raised concerns about how Unilever presents some products as environmentally friendly. The watchdog is planning to communicate its concerns to Unilever and, depending on the outcome of its investigation, may take actions ranging from securing commitments to change practices, legal proceedings, or closing the investigation.

Unilever responded by expressing surprise and disappointment at the CMA’s announcement, stating that they refute any suggestion of misleading claims. The company emphasized its commitment to making responsible and transparent claims about product benefits, asserting the existence of robust processes to substantiate these claims. Unilever pledged cooperation with the CMA throughout the investigation.

This inquiry is part of a broader investigation by the CMA into greenwashing by companies, expanded in January to include various consumer goods sectors. The CMA is scrutinizing environmental claims made by companies, aiming to prevent false exploitation of the rising consumer focus on environmental issues. The regulator flagged concerns about vague and broad eco-statements, such as products labeled as ‘sustainable’ or ‘better’ for the environment without proper evidence.

As the investigation unfolds, the CMA is expected to shed light on the specific products or practices by Unilever that raised regulatory concerns. The investigation aligns with a growing trend of regulatory bodies globally scrutinizing environmental claims to ensure accuracy, transparency, and authenticity in companies’ sustainability assertions.
