Apple’s developer conference this Monday wasn’t just about showcasing the latest in artificial intelligence technology, including features powered by ChatGPT; it was also a strategic move to boost iPhone sales. With consumer spending facing challenges and competition from resurgent tech rivals, Apple is leveraging AI to rejuvenate its massive user base of over 1 billion customers and reverse the sales decline of its flagship product.

The unveiling of Apple Intelligence, the company’s take on generative AI, promises a new wave of innovation. Analysts believe that the software, requiring at least an iPhone 15 Pro or Pro Max, could spark a significant upgrade cycle, potentially rivaling the enthusiasm seen with the iPhone 12’s release in 2020, driven in part by the introduction of 5G connectivity.

Analyst Gil Luria of D.A. Davidson described Monday’s announcements as “more compelling than anything we’ve seen since,” underscoring the potential impact of Apple’s AI-driven features on consumer behavior.

Apple Intelligence promises a range of capabilities, from generating custom emojis to crafting text messages and enhancing emails. Siri, Apple’s digital assistant, is also integrated with ChatGPT, offering users additional assistance and functionality.

However, not all analysts are convinced of the immediate impact on consumer behavior. Dipanjan Chatterjee of Forrester expressed skepticism, suggesting that the new AI features may not be enough to significantly drive iPhone sales. Tejas Dessai of Global X echoed this sentiment, noting that investors are looking for a more comprehensive AI strategy from Apple.

Despite the skepticism, there’s optimism about the potential of Apple’s AI push. The requirement for newer iPhone models to access these features presents a significant opportunity, with Wedbush Securities analyst Dan Ives estimating that a sizable portion of Apple’s installed base could upgrade to the iPhone 16, driven by the allure of Apple Intelligence.

Gene Munster of Deepwater Asset Management highlighted Apple’s seamless integration with ChatGPT as a notable strength, emphasizing the company’s ability to simplify AI usage for consumers.

While AI is positioned as a key selling point for Apple, it’s just one aspect of the company’s appeal. Features like larger displays and improved cameras remain primary drivers of consumer interest. However, the AI updates are expected to attract early adopters and differentiate Apple for its ability to facilitate seamless actions across apps.

As anticipation builds for the iPhone 16 release expected this autumn, Apple’s foray into AI represents a strategic move to reignite excitement around its flagship product and reinforce its position as a leader in consumer technology.
