Meta Platforms Inc. (META.O) is reportedly developing an innovative mixed reality device internally known as “Puffin,” according to a report by The Information released on Wednesday. This new project aims to offer a groundbreaking alternative to the company’s existing bulky VR headsets, which have so far seen limited consumer appeal.

The Puffin device, envisioned as a sleek, lightweight pair of glasses, represents a significant departure from the heavy and cumbersome headsets Meta currently markets under the Quest brand. This new mixed reality gadget is designed to blend augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR), providing a more seamless and integrated user experience.

Mixed reality combines elements of both augmented reality and virtual reality to create interactive environments where real-world and digital objects coexist and interact. While augmented reality adds layers of text, graphics, and sound to the user’s view of the real world, virtual reality immerses users entirely in a computer-generated environment. The Puffin device is expected to leverage these technologies to offer a more immersive and versatile experience than Meta’s current offerings.

Unlike the existing Quest headsets, which come with separate handheld controllers, Puffin will introduce a novel approach by allowing users to control the device through hand gestures and eye movements. This user-friendly interface is anticipated to enhance the overall ease of use and appeal of the device.

The development of Puffin is still in its early stages, with a projected release date set for 2027. Meta’s Reality Labs division, responsible for the Quest VR headsets, has faced substantial financial losses amounting to billions of dollars. Despite these setbacks, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg remains highly optimistic about the future potential of augmented and virtual reality technologies.

The market for virtual and mixed reality headsets has gained renewed interest following the introduction of Apple’s Vision Pro last year. However, the Vision Pro’s high price tag of nearly $3,500 has posed challenges for its sales. In contrast, Meta’s Puffin aims to provide a more accessible and user-friendly alternative, potentially capturing a broader audience.

As the mixed reality landscape continues to evolve, Meta’s strategic focus on developing a more practical and appealing device like Puffin underscores its commitment to leading innovation in this burgeoning field. The company’s efforts reflect a broader trend in the tech industry towards creating more integrated and immersive experiences for users.
