225 Tesla announced on Tuesday that it is recalling most Cybertrucks in the United States due to issues with windshield wipers and exterior trim, marking a notable setback for the highly anticipated electric truck ahead of its anticipated mass production next year. Unlike Tesla’s usual approach of resolving issues through software updates, this physical recall affects more than 11,000 vehicles, underscoring the challenges faced with the Cybertruck’s initial rollout. The Cybertruck, designed as Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s response to demands for a refreshed lineup amid slowing electric vehicle demand, has encountered difficulties with components such as the wiper motor, especially notable due to the vehicle’s unique 4-foot-long wiper blade. Analysts have pointed out that the extended lever arm puts significant stress on the motor, leading to numerous reports of failures since production began. Tesla began deliveries of the Cybertruck in November 2023 after significant delays and production challenges, which Musk himself likened to Tesla “digging its own grave.” The company aimed to initially produce over 125,000 Cybertrucks annually, with plans to potentially increase production to 250,000 by 2025. The latest recalls, affecting more than 70% of all units produced, address critical safety concerns including faulty windshield wiper motors and improperly attached trunk bed trim appliques that could become road hazards. These issues prompted Tesla to take proactive measures, including replacing defective parts and improving installation procedures. These recalls add to Tesla’s recent quality concerns with the Cybertruck, following earlier recalls related to accelerator pedal pads coming loose. Despite these setbacks, Tesla’s shares rose slightly in morning trading, reflecting investor confidence amid ongoing production challenges and quality control issues.
