100 Microsoft plans to equip its employees in China with Apple’s iOS-based devices to facilitate access to essential authentication apps. This decision comes in response to the absence of Google’s Android services in the country, a Microsoft spokesperson announced on Monday. Microsoft’s move follows increased scrutiny after a series of security breaches, the most recent involving Russian hackers who accessed and spied on the emails of Microsoft employees and customers earlier this year. The switch to Apple devices aims to enhance security and accessibility for its workforce in China. Bloomberg News first reported the development, citing an internal memo. According to the report, Microsoft instructed its employees in China to begin using Apple devices in the workplace starting in September. This directive is part of Microsoft’s global Secure Future Initiative, which seeks to address security challenges and ensure reliable access to necessary apps. The absence of the Google Play Store in China has significantly limited employees’ ability to access critical security apps, such as Microsoft Authenticator and Identity Pass. As a result, Microsoft determined that providing iOS devices was the most viable solution to meet these needs. “Due to the lack of availability of Google Mobile Services in this region, we look to offer employees a means of accessing these required apps, such as an iOS device,” a company spokesperson explained in an email to Reuters. Microsoft has maintained a strong presence in China since entering the market in 1992. The company operates a large research and development center in the country, underscoring its long-term commitment to the region. According to the Bloomberg report, Microsoft will provide iPhone 15 models to employees currently using Android handsets across China, including in Hong Kong. This transition is expected to streamline operations and enhance security for Microsoft’s Chinese workforce. By adopting iOS devices, Microsoft aims to mitigate the challenges posed by the unavailability of Google services in China and ensure that its employees have reliable access to essential security tools. This strategic move highlights the company’s dedication to maintaining robust security measures and supporting its global workforce in adapting to regional constraints. In summary, Microsoft’s decision to switch to Apple devices for its employees in China reflects a proactive approach to overcoming security and accessibility challenges. As part of the Secure Future Initiative, this move underscores the company’s commitment to safeguarding its operations and providing its employees with the necessary tools to perform their roles effectively.
