114 Collins Aerospace, a subsidiary of RTX, is set to unveil a new cabin solution designed to improve in-flight experiences for passengers with reduced mobility. This innovative product will be showcased at the annual Aircraft Interiors Expo in Hamburg, Germany, and is compatible with most WC19 and ISO 7176-19 transport-certified powered wheelchairs, offering a more equitable travel experience for passengers who rely on personal mobility devices. Cynthia Muklevicz, Vice President of Customer and Business Development for Collins Aerospace, emphasized the importance of this development, stating, “Enabling motorized wheelchair users to remain in their chair is imperative to providing a more equitable and dignified air travel experience to the millions of people who rely on personal mobility devices in their everyday lives. Innovating solutions that enhance the inflight and cabin experience is fundamental to the mission of Collins. We’re confident this certifiable solution will help eliminate barriers, opening greater possibilities to a wider population to more conveniently experience the excitement and necessity of air travel.” The solution not only simplifies boarding and deplaning but also reduces the risk of personal injury and discomfort associated with transferring individuals in and out of their wheelchairs. It significantly decreases the instances of mishandled wheelchairs during check-in, handling, and stowage processes. Tests conducted at the National Institute of Aviation Research (NIAR) showed that the boarding process with the Collins solution mirrors the average ground transportation experience, aligning air travel accommodations with those of other transportation modes. The installation of this system involves integrated restraint and seat belt attachments that secure both the wheelchair and the passenger. When not in use, the restraint system can be stowed away, utilizing previously unused space without requiring seat removal or modifications. This maintains a consistent experience for all passengers and allows airlines to operate with existing seating densities.
