CVS Health’s Aetna Unit Expands Fertility Benefits, Offering Broader Access to LGBTQ+ Individuals Seeking Intrauterine Insemination

Starting September 1, CVS Health’s Aetna health insurance unit will significantly expand its fertility coverage by including intrauterine insemination (IUI) regardless of a patient’s fertility status. This progressive move is aimed at improving access to fertility treatments for individuals within the LGBTQ+ community, who have historically faced barriers in obtaining such care.

Previously, Aetna’s fertility coverage was limited to couples who could demonstrate that they had attempted to conceive through heterosexual intercourse for a period of six or 12 months, depending on their specific situation. This requirement often excluded LGBTQ+ couples and others who do not conceive through traditional means, forcing them to shoulder the financial burden of fertility treatments out of pocket.

Aetna’s decision to broaden its coverage comes in the wake of a lawsuit filed in May by lead plaintiff Emma Goidel, who challenged the company’s previous policy. According to the lawsuit, Goidel was required to spend $45,000 on fertility treatments before being eligible for coverage of IUI—a procedure that involves placing sperm directly into a woman’s uterus during her fertile period.

The lawsuit highlighted the inequities faced by LGBTQ+ individuals and others who cannot conceive through heterosexual intercourse. The court documents made public as part of the lawsuit revealed that Aetna’s previous policy disproportionately affected these groups, leading to significant out-of-pocket expenses.

As part of the settlement reached in May, Aetna agreed to update its policies to provide coverage for artificial insemination regardless of a patient’s sexual orientation. Additionally, the insurer committed to reimbursing $2 million to patients who had previously paid out-of-pocket for fertility treatments.

Intrauterine insemination is a key fertility option for women in same-sex couples who wish to conceive but have not experienced reduced fertility. Unlike in vitro fertilization (IVF), which involves more complex and costly procedures, IUI is often the first step for many LGBTQ+ individuals in their journey to parenthood.

Aetna’s updated policy reflects a broader industry trend towards inclusivity and equitable access to healthcare services. By removing the barriers that previously limited access to fertility treatments, Aetna is taking a significant step forward in supporting all individuals and couples in their efforts to build a family.

Cathy Moffitt, Aetna’s Chief Medical Officer, expressed the company’s commitment to inclusivity, stating, “This industry-leading policy change is a stake in the ground, reflecting Aetna’s support of all who need to use this benefit as a preliminary step in building their family.”

As this policy takes effect, it is expected to make a meaningful difference in the lives of many individuals and couples who have faced challenges in accessing fertility care. This change also underscores the importance of addressing healthcare disparities and ensuring that all people, regardless of their sexual orientation or fertility status, have the opportunity to pursue their dream of parenthood.

With the new policy in place, Aetna is setting a precedent for other insurers to follow, signaling a shift towards more inclusive and compassionate healthcare coverage for all.
