Cardinal Health (NYSE: CAH) proudly announces its recent approval by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) for its science-based greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction targets. These targets, considered science-based, align with the latest climate science guidelines aimed at limiting global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.

Megan Maltenfort, Vice President of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) at Cardinal Health, expressed the company’s dedication to reducing its environmental impact and fostering a more sustainable world. Maltenfort emphasized Cardinal Health’s collaboration with SBTi and its commitment to taking proactive measures to combat climate change and minimize the environmental footprint of its products and processes.

With SBTi’s approval, Cardinal Health commits to the following science-based targets:

  1. Reduce absolute Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 50% by fiscal 2030 compared to a fiscal 2019 base year.
  2. Ensure that 75% of its suppliers by spend, covering purchased goods and services as well as upstream transportation and distribution, have science-based targets by fiscal 2028.

These approved targets signify an expansion of Cardinal Health’s previous goal of reducing Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions, announced in September 2021. The inclusion of Scope 3 emissions from the supply chain has elevated the ambition of the company’s goals.

Maltenfort reiterated Cardinal Health’s commitment to collaborating with partners along its supply chain to collectively address the impacts of climate change as the company works towards achieving its targets.

As of the end of fiscal 2023, Cardinal Health had already achieved a 13% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions compared to the fiscal 2019 base year. Furthermore, the company continues to invest in energy efficiency initiatives in its distribution and manufacturing sites while exploring opportunities to expand its use of renewable energy across the enterprise. Progress towards Cardinal Health’s climate goals is reported annually in its Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Report.

The Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) is a globally recognized organization that enables businesses to set ambitious emissions reduction targets in line with the latest climate science. It operates through a collaboration between CDP, the United Nations Global Compact, the World Resources Institute (WRI), and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), and is a key commitment of the We Mean Business Coalition.
