100 Lidl UK, the British division of the German supermarket chain, has announced a wage increase of over 3% in June, marking the third pay raise for thousands of workers within 12 months. Effective June, Lidl will raise wages for its staff across Britain to £12.40 per hour from £12, while London-based employees will receive £13.65 per hour, up from £13.55. With 32,000 employees across Britain, Lidl’s pay adjustments are closely monitored by the Bank of England, particularly amidst continued robust growth in wages, which contributes to inflationary pressures. Following the government’s increase in the national living wage to £11.44 per hour, other major retailers like John Lewis and Co-op have also announced pay rises of 10%. Lidl, a part of Germany’s Schwarz retail group and the sixth largest supermarket chain in Britain with an 8% market share, asserts that its latest wage increase maintains its position as a leader in providing competitive pay within the industry.
